Tokyo comes to Paris Part 2: Miharayasuhiro X WOW X Paolo Roversi

Leaving Tokyo Graphic Passport and the Centre Pompidou we headed for Carrousel de Lourve, an underground shopping mall attached to Paris’ greatest and most famous museum, the Louvre.

This would be home for Japanese fashion designer, Mihara Yasuhiro, originally known for footwear and his collaborations with Sports brand, Puma but has more recently moved to Men and Women’s wear. As part of Miharayasuhiro’s show for his current Spring/Summer 2012 collection for Paris Fashion Week, WOW created a unique interactive installation, based on a trailer they made for the collection entitled, ‘Ophelia Has A Dream’. It was in collaboration with Italian-born fashion photographer, Paolo Roversi. Miharayasuhiro has chosen to express his collection through the character of Ophelia. a fictional character in the play Hamlet. The girl is said to represent purity and innocence. John Everett Millais’ (1852) painting of Ophelia was an obvious inspiration for WOW’s Sendai creative team as they set about creating a live-action scene in a gold picture frame, as if it were an actual Classical painting, which you could also interactive with via Microsoft’s Kinect technology and included Music also composed by WOW.

The installation attracted a number of Fashionistas and Celebrities including Bryan Adams. The installation was live from Friday 30th September – Monday 3rd October.

WOW also worked with Miharayasuhiro on his Spring/Summer 2011 catwalk show in Paris.

WOW are celebrating 15 years in operations, starting originally as a commercial CGI company, they are now innovative, internationally renowned creators. With offices in Tokyo, Sendai and Florence- Italy, expect them to be invading London soon.

Tokyo comes to Paris Part 1: Tokyo Graphic Passport

Last weekend, I was invited to Paris, France to attend 3 events involving my friends from Tokyo- a Very successful Motion-Graphics company called WOW and one of their long-time collaborators, Art Director Shun Kawakami (Artless).

Firstly, Tokyo Graphic Passport, a creative event based on the Japanese graphic design ethos of cross-cultural exchange and mutual understanding, is themed “Think, Touch, and Talk.”. It was a 12-day event held from September 22nd 2011 to October 3rd 2011 at Centre Pompidou.

Shun Kawakami and Mamoru Kano of Wow and other creators representing the new breed of Japanese creativity were asked to exhibit. Other creators included Kashiwa Sato, Yugo Nakamura, Kazunari Hattori and my personal heroes, Tycoon Graphics.

As well as an exhibition of print work and Installations, there was also Workshops by some of the creators, Portfolio viewing and Symposiums. These included French creators such as M/M Paris and H5 in discussion with their Japanese counterparts.

Saturday 1st of October workshops saw Shun Kawakami give a talk about this process when designing this own ‘Artless‘ website and encouraging the attendees to experiment with the use of a grid system to design their own webpage.

15 specially designed posters for the event were offered free for a donation to the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.
Tokyo Graphic Passport was supported by Japanese +81magazine

PARIS VS NEW YORK

Loving the look of this book by illustrator Vahram Muratyan

Vahram Muratyan is an expert of visual communication. He’s teaching graphic design at the famous ESAG-Penninghen school and worked as a free-lance for clients such as Arte, Chanel, La Galerie de l’Opéra de Paris, etc… He’s known today for his cute and funny blog he created at the end of 2010 after a long stay in U.S. Paris versus New York is the first paper version of the blog : a collection of visual matches showing the differences, the clichés and contradictions of the two cities. A great experience for the lovers of the both cities and illustration amateurs.

Release on November 3, 2011

Signage for a Txt-Generation

MCV JAMCA GNGR CK TWN PK

Spotted last night in my local CO-OP supermarket.

Is this an example of a company appealing to the needs of its consumers, or perhaps its communicating to its hopeless store staff?
